Ca Va?

It was raining outside and we had both run under the awning of the dance studio for shelter when the strange man suddenly began speaking to me in French. It was an assuming, confident French — none of this “pardon, mais parlez-vous francais, parce que . . .” but a “hi there, how are ya”, as if he knew me at first sight, as if we shared some secret and that secret was French.

He must think I am someone else. He turned to the wrong brunette. But it is raining and the cement is a glassy beige, and as the cars go by they sound like the tide coming in, and all around us neon signs announce furniture deals and bodies glide by on flowered umbrellas, and we are standing under an awning like trees on the side of a river. I respond to him and for a moment I could be anyone, we could be anywhere.

When You’re Away

When you’re away, the cat howls at the ceiling like a wolf. Hours and hours he’ll go on like that. I don’t know how to make him stop.

“Jack,” I’ll say. “Jack Jack.” I’ll check the food and the water. I’ll pet his glorious dark ruff, pull the tail that looks like a duster until he chirps and glares at me with gold-piece eyes. I’ll sleep in the space you usually sleep and turn off the light at the same time we do every night. But he is not so easily fooled. The other kitty, the dopey one we say loves me, is purring devotionals at my feet, all warmth and fuzz. “Jack,” I say, “Jack Jack.”

This is how we speak to them: purely in names. But I don’t know if he even hears me; he has buried himself in a pile of your clothes in the next room. He is wearing your underwear and has barricaded the door. He’s smoking your stash and fucking up your recycling; I hear the paper bin crash. All of the neighbors will know you are gone tonight.

Howl! Howl, howl!

The Doctor Is In

Dr. Sketchy, that is. Every other Sunday, apparently you can bring a drawing pad to some bar and a lovely lady will pose burlesquely for you. Today I helped Sugar out at Great Scott. Full album here.

Wheeeeeeeeeee.

You expect people to hoot and holler at these things. It’s the middle of a Sunday afternoon and they’ve holed themselves into a dark dive bar in one of the crappiest suburbs of Boston to draw a lady in pasties and sparkle boots. They probably want to get crunk, right? But this crowd was serious. “Do you guys want to do any contests?” Sugar offered. ” We vote on the best propaganda poster? No? You can win free beer. Tickets to this documentary on happy endings. No?”

No. These were mostly art students, full of debt and destroyed-in-a-year dreams. They just wanted to draw again. “How long are the next set of poses?” they kept asking. They organized crumbling utensils and furrowed their brows. In three hours, not one person got up to leave.

There was an old man sitting in the corner who didn’t draw at all; he just watched one minute, two minute, five minute, ten minute, twenty minute poses — the entire time. During each break he hobbled over to chat with me and tell me Latin jokes, even though I told him I’d never taken Latin. “See, that joke would be much funnier to you, if you knew the Latin.” His tobacco pipe was a finely carved naked woman. Before he showed it to me, he asked if I was ready for it. “Over a hundred years old. The model probably doesn’t look like this any more. I don’t smoke very often, but when I do it’s the most wonderful thing. And anything that improves upon that experience, I’m for it.”

Faint of heart, beware: after the jump it gets a little spicier.

Your Repair Is Ready

I knocked on his door five minutes before closing. The door swung open and I stepped into the darkness. “Hello?” he said.

“Hi. I’m sorry, I know you close soon, but I was in the area and thought I’d just drop in and pick up my camera.”

“Ah. Yes.” He stood there in his pressed navy labcoat and evaluated me for a few minutes. “Remind me what camera that would be.”

“It’d be under Adrianne Mathiowetz.”

No response.

“Canon XSi.”

Silence.

“The compression damage.”

“Ah, yes.”

He brought out a memory card and several lenses so that we could verify it worked, which, as it turned out, it didn’t. There had been more damage than he’d originally seen: the mount had been bent and jammed, which he’d fixed, but a few of the tiny sensors inside which allow the lens to communicate with the camera had also been punched in. He walked to a table with a bright lamp and magnifying glass and bent over the light. “Hmm.” He looked under the magnifying glass again. “Hmm.” His face glowed like a ghost story. “There.”
